Police Data

May.

This has been a particularly busy time for the police with a marked increase in the number of crimes reported/investigated. At the same time it would appear that residents are not informing the police when suspicious incidents or anti social behaviour is taking place which offenders are taking advantage of. It is requested that any such behaviour is reported.

Crime reduction leaflets have been provided to the new residents of the Hortham Village development.

Trading Standards

Rogue Traders

South Gloucestershire Trading Standards would like to remind consumers to be vigilant when choosing a trader, and to know who you are dealing with.

Trading Standards have been made aware of a paving company advertising heavily in the Thornbury area. Reports have been received of the company cold calling for business at resident’s doors, but starting work before any quote has been accepted.

If work has been started on your property before you have agreed a price and entered into a contract, this may constitute criminal damage and the advice is to contact the Police.

If the visit is unsolicited and you enter into a contract, you should be given written notice of your seven day cooling off period during which you can cancel the contract.  If this notice is not given to you, the contract could be unenforceable and the trader may have committed a criminal offence. You can contact Consumer Direct to discuss your rights in this instance.

There are a number of steps consumers can take to try and avoid becoming the victim of a rogue trader.

  • Be wary of traders who cold call and the deals they offer you – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  • If they claim work needs doing, get a second or even third opinion from other professional tradesman.
  • Obtain a number of quotes, in writing and detailing what work will be done.
  • Ask traders for references or recommendations from previous customers.
  • Ensure you have the correct company name and/or owners name and the full postal address – this will not guarantee the work is done satisfactorily but may enable you to take further action if things go wrong.
  • If the goods / services cost £100 or more, try and pay some or all of it on a credit card as this may afford you additional protection.

If you find yourself in dispute with a trader, or would like some further pre-shopping advice, please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

Fairtrade Fortnight

25th February to 9th March 2008

Whenever you buy a product bearing the FAIRTRADE Mark, you know that the product has been traded as directly as possible and the farmers have received a fair price for their produce. This is enough to cover the cost of living and even provides enough money to send their children to school.

There is a wide range of Fairtrade products available now, from confectionery to cotton wool, spices to sauces and rice cakes to roses. Although many outlets stock the basics – tea, coffee, chocolate and bananas – it can be hard to find the full range of products. The Fairtrade Everyday Cookbook will come out during Fairtrade Fortnight so everyone will be looking for ingredients so they can try out the delicious recipes. What happens when you get to the supermarket and you cannot find the Fairtrade product you want?

Action!

This Fairtrade Fortnight and throughout 2008, please ask your local supermarkets, shops, catering outlets and retailers to ‘Stock it!’

Use ‘Stock it!’ postcards, available from the Fairtrade Website, any Fairtrade event or Emmaus Church (emmauschurch@fsmail.net), and hand them out to your local supermarkets and shops.

Encourage your workplace, school, club, society and group to become ‘Fairtrade’. Thornbury is a Fairtrade town. How about Easter Compton, Pilning and Severn Beach becoming Fairtrade villages?
