 1st Pilning Guide Unit

Unit Guider: Fi Riches - 01454 632811

Assistant Guider: Shaunna Plunkett-Levin

We started 2007 with new patrol activities.  The chosen “Go For It” packs were Flights of Fancy (crafts), Teamwork, Experiment and Glamourama.  The Guides organised and carried out activities such as making kites, T shirt painting, yoga, fruit cocktails, lipstick art, making slime, soap on a rope and makeovers.  In February we joined hundreds of other Guides, Brownies and Rainbows making crafts from around the world at the Division World Thinking Day event at Thornbury Leisure Centre.  In the Unit we had instructors in to teach the First Aid badge and the girls also completed the Personal Safety badge.  We raised £163 with our Night Hike to Aust sponsored this year for Comic Relief.  Several girls also found time to complete individual badges including Sportswoman, Hobbies and Film Lover.

In the summer term the “Go For It”s were Healthy Eating, Five Senses and Sport, so there was lots of cooking, plus smells, fruit creations, cheerleading and games. In May our Camp at Woodhouse Park had a Chocolate Theme.  On our Carnival float we were rather surreal with our “Alice in Chavland” (the White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts, etc dressed in Burberry and bling) but we won a cup.  We also enjoyed an evening abseiling and a day climbing, zip-wiring and canoeing.  The “Guide of the Year” award for 2006-07 went to Shanti Das.

We started the Autumn term with Harvest cooking making apple and blackberry puddings.  Several girls completed the 21 miles Five Valleys Walk around Stroud in aid of the Meningitis Trust.  We went to Manchester for this year’s Girlguiding Big Gig Concert to see McFly, Natasha Bedingfield and other acts for the girls to scream at.  This term’s “Go For It”s were Experiment, Animal Active and Patrol Extra, producing activities such as sizzling sherbet, popping corn, animal biscuits, bird tables, a pet Show and Ready Steady Cook.  We have five Year 9 girls working towards the prestigious Baden Powell Award.  The girls have been working towards the Cooks and Animal Active badges. We took part in the annual Remembrance Day parade and ended the term with a Pirate themed Party.

We are desperate for additional adult helpers, so if you are an ex Guider, or ex Guide, or just someone who believes that Guiding is a good thing – please phone Fi on 632811.
